The other day I was scrolling through the trending list on bearblog and I came across this post talking about how “You are not obliged to be deep and meaningful on your blog.”
It’s a good bit of advice.
Back when I first attempted to start keeping a journal, I was inspired by a book I had read where each chapter was presented as an entry in the protagonist’s journal1. I tried to imitate that, but needless to say real life does not have nice, neat plot arcs, and most days simply do not have a chapter’s worth of events worth remarking on. They definitely don’t have time to get all that down. My journaling these days is more consistent, and much more spare. Some days it’s only a single sentence such as “I was really busy at work” and that’s all I manage before I crawl into bed.
This blog is not my journal, but it isn’t entirely separate from it. It’s a mish-mash of the thoughts and ideas that come through my brain, and by standing as a record of those thoughts over time it fulfills some of the same purpose.
I try not to worry about having “enough” to say for a post. If it really is just one or two sentences, than that will probably just get tweeted, but I’m not trying to fill pages. I don’t have a word count to meet. If it’s short, fine. If it’s 100 words, fine. 20, fine. Sometimes I finish a post and am unsure whether I have actually managed to make a point. Well that’s alright. The important thing, to me, is getting the words out there.
Technically it was fanfiction, but I count that as books. Especially since I happen to have a printed edition of this one. ↩︎
