The hullabaloo has finally died down. But I need something quick and easy for today, so I’m going to stir it up again. Also, the state of things here has changed.
I added a comment section.
I built it myself! It’s made with Sqlite , Go , and htmx for those who are interested in such details. I do not have a tremendous amount of experience in web development, but that has been a comfortable enough set of tools to use. Things aren’t very fancy, and I do still have some finishing to do, but they work. I even set it up to send notifications to my phone when people comment (please don’t make me regret this). That sounds complicated, but Juhis tipped me off about ntfy.sh which made it easy (this is not sponsored). Thank you!
Actually, I did this a couple of days ago. Already I have a few observations. I talked about email as an alternative to comments, but the fact is that the number of comments I’ve gotten on my last few posts is larger than the number of emails I typically get. It remains to be seen if that will continue, but it doesn’t look good for email so far (you are still welcome to email me). I have also discovered one of the disadvantages of DIYing your comments: if you don’t get any for a while, you start to wonder if it’s because nobody with anything to say is reading your posts, or if things are just broken đ .
I always intended to do this, but the discussion spurred me into actually getting to it. Thank you to everyone who contributed to it.
Update: Remy did this too.
