More Attention

April 22, 2025

So first things first: I don’t travel very often. I take one trip a year, if that. Well, I just went on my second trip so far this year and its only April. I intend to wrate a post covering the reason for this trip, but I just got home and am tired, so this little gripe will have to do for tonight.

So naturally, immediately before I left, I broke my site.

Ironically, I had only been trying to fix a problem JP noticed with my RSS feed. I got that fixed, but I ran hugo server to preview the changes and forgot to actually rebuild the site before uploading it. This sent the preview version of things, with all the links pointing unhelpfully to localhost, to the open internet. A trivial mistake and trivial to fix. All I had to do was run hugo build and reupload it1.

Except I was now a thousand miles away from my computer. When I get on a plane its to go somewhere for a specific reason, not just stare at my laptop with a different background. There was nothing I could do about it until I got home.

There is an aptness to my previous post being a plea for attention. Not only did that post become my most viewed one by far while I was gone. I also got DMs from multiple people on Mastodon letting me know the site was broken. That inspired a number of feelings. On one hand it was frustrating, after the first time, to keep getting messages about the same problem, and to have it be something I physically could not fix. But then on the other hand I did very much appreciate people contacting me about it and, as a side effect, confirming that I am not just blogging into the void. Thanks Fediverse!

One of the “hazards” of running a website is that now whenever anything happens to me there’s a part of me thinking I could write a blog post about it.

  1. The step after that was to create a script to build the site and upload it in one step. Now I can’t forget it. ↩︎
