So You Want A Typewriter?

To wrap up typewriter week, I thought I’d share some resources for anyone who is also interested in typewriters.

Where to get one

It is best to get a typewriter in person. They are expensive to ship and liable to be damaged. Check thrift stores and Craigslist (or your local equivalent) first. If you do shop online, there is (of course) ebay and ShopGoodwill .

Getting info

Once you have a machine you will likely want to know more about it. The Typewriter Database is an invaluable resource for this.

There are multiple channels on Youtube that have a wealth of information both general and specific. There’s Phoenix Typewriter , who has many videos of various repairs. Just My Typewriter and Joe Van Cleave both make a lot of good videos.

And of course I would be remiss if I did not mention Richard Polt’s Classic Typewriter Page .

Using it

You can write anything you want on a typewriter, but I do have some suggestions. There is a whole community of bloggers using typewriters called the Typosphere . Exploring that is a whole journey that I will leave to you, but may I suggest starting with One Typed Page , a feed of posts that are exactly what the name says.

There is much more than I could ever fit on this page. But I think researching a hobby is fun all on its own.
