This Website Is Unfinished

April 11, 2025

Having your own website is a project that never ends. I mean that in a good way, not a Sisyphean way. It’s not that the goal of this site is unacheivable, it’s just that there is no final goal1.

The only goals are whatever things I decide I want to do. Right now, for example, the main color of this website is green. But I have no commitment to branding. I could change it to blue tomorrow. I could program it to take a new random color every time you visit it. Or something else entirely.

This is, all things considered, a simple website. Even so, sometimes it is hard to get a blog post out without some change to the site with it, a new page or button or even just a little tweak to a bit of formatting.

Part of the beauty of websites is that they are so malleable. Once you have learned a little HTML and CSS and Javascript, the materials they are made of, you can shape them in almost any way. In an earlier, more innocent, age that was a large part of the joy of computers2.

One recent change was to add a contact form. Go ahead and send me a message. And then just today I added a page to share cool links I’ve found. There’s not much there yet, but it will grow.

Having your own website is awesome!

  1. Well, never done isn’t quite right. I could never touch this thing again after today and it would not any more unfinished than if I kept writing for 10 years. (I hope to be closer to the latter). ↩︎

  2. “The programmer, like the poet, works only slightly removed from pure thought-stuff. He builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. Few media of creation are so flexible, so easy to polish and rework, so readily capable of realizing grand conceptual structures.” The Mythical Man Month, Fred Brooks. ↩︎
